The lecture series created in 2022 to honor the legacy of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Professor Emeritus of Sociology Jerry M. Lewis, Ph.D., will feature ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Assistant Professor of Higher Education Administration Erica Eckert, Ph.D., as this year’s selected speaker.

Advancing the legacy of May 4, 1970, a tragic day when the Ohio National Guard fired on ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students during an anti-war protest on campus, killing four students, wounding nine students and forever changing the lives of countless others, the university will hold its annual commemoration on May 3-4.
ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Remembers the Events of May 4, 1970
ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ has scheduled a variety of programs, events and exhibits for this year’s remembrance of May 4, 1970, to honor the four students who were killed, the nine students who were wounded and the countless others whose lives were forever changed when the Ohio National Guard fired on ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students during an anti-war protest.
ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s May 4 Events to Include In-Person Dedication of Wounded Student Markers
This year’s return of in-person events to commemorate the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ shootings will include the dedication of bronze markers placed on the spots where nine students were wounded on May 4, 1970. Markers designating the locations of each of the four students killed were installed in 1999. Since that time, a small group had been working to have similar markers placed for the wounded students.

For the first time since 2019, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ will remember May 4, 1970, with its return to an in-person, annual commemoration to honor the four students who were killed, the nine students who were wounded and the countless others whose lives were forever changed when the Ohio National Guard fired on ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students during an anti-war protest.
ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ School of Music to Commemorate May 4 Through Music, Dance and Poetry at Severance
The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ School of Music returns to Severance Music Center on Monday, May 2, at 7 p.m. featuring nearly 300 students from across the university performing a rich lineup of genres and styles from classical and jazz to gospel and world music. It will also feature collaborations with the School of Theatre and Dance and the Wick Poetry Center.

Virtual Events Promote Peace, Anti-Racism as ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Marks the Annual Commemoration of May 4, 1970
To honor and remember the events that occurred on May 4, 1970, virtual events and exhibits hosted by ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students, faculty and staff are scheduled from April 30 through May 4. The virtual events include several powerful speakers and events that promote peace and anti-racism and educate future students about the legacy of May 4, 1970.
